A court hearing into the alleged settlement of illegal migrants at the Lum Survey area under Shillong Cantonment will be held on May 27, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills SC Sadhu informed today.
The DC told reporters this following a meeting with the CEOs of the Cantonment Board and Shillong Municipal Board as well as representatives from the defence estate office in Guwahati.
A pressure group had raised the matter of the supposed illegal settlers, numbering around 100 families, recently.
Sadhu said that this area falls under the defence estate office of Guwahati and the representatives have shared the entire history of what action has been initiated by them and what are the subsequent court proceedings.
“Once they share this information, we will also study and this will help us to decide on our course of action. But what transpired in this meeting is that, initially there was a title suit for this land. It was given in favour of the defence estate office,” he said, adding that after this an eviction notice was issued but this was stayed by the court.
“Based on this, the court has fixed May 27 as the date for the hearing and the court asked the defence estate to respond to queries,” Sadhu said.
Relating to reports of illicit activities taking place in Lum Survey, the DC said that police have been instructed to submit a detailed report on the law and order situation in this area.
