The Congress Party today exuded confidence that it would be able to hold on to the Shillong seat while wresting Tura away from the National People’s Party at this year’s Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress’s official in charge of Meghalaya, A Chellakumar, said this at a press conference here today.
A screening committee has been formed and the party will soon declare its candidates for the election. Kumar has interacted with many senior Congress leaders at the state and block levels.
“We are in the process of fulfilling all the party positions right from the booth level committees to the Pradesh Congress Committees and to fill up all the organisational positions, whether it is in the Youth Congress, Mahila, the Kisan cell, and regenerate everything,” he said.
There have been good levels of central government investment in infrastructure and development works thanks to the efforts of Shillong MP Vincent Pala while the Congress was in power at the Centre and the party was also responsible for the creation of NEHU, IIM Shillong, NIFT Shillong and other developmental projects in the state, he claimed.
The Congress is on the rise once again, Kumar said, and the party is confident that it can convince the voters to give them the mandate in Shillong and Tura.
He also took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that he is good at speaking but not at answering questions, which is borne out by his reluctance to be interviewed by the media. This is in stark contrast to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Kumar opined.
