There might be a total lockdown in East Khasi Hills and similar measures in other districts, but criminals are still finding ways of making off with ill-gotten loot.
According to data from the police, this week has seen numerous thefts, such as that on Friday morning when unknown miscreants stole parts of one Assam-registered truck (AS 26C 5873), which was parked at Murgibazar Junction here. The day after, unknown miscreants made off with a motorcycle (ML 05P 9297) belonging to one Maikal Narzari that was parked near his residence in New Kench’s Trace here.
Also on Saturday, Dr Diganta Das lodged a complaint that unknown miscreants stole electric wire from the pump room of Ferndale Complex in Shillong. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, one Kynshailang Nonglang was robbed of Rs 6,500 by an unidentified person at a place between Mawkyllut and Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills.
Sometimes, though, the police are able to catch the perpetrators in the act. On May 18, police detained one Max Eric Syiemlieh (22) while he was stealing Rs 2,000 from Ukil Rai (43) in Demseiniong, Shillong.
That same evening, in an attempt to steal money, unknown miscreants vandalized the ATM located at the State Bank of India Laitumkhrah branch. However, they could not open the vault containing the cash.
Even healthcare facilities are being targeted by criminals. Dr Beatrice Warjri, Medical Officer in charge of Nongthymmai UPHC, Shillong, lodged a complaint that on the night of May 18, unknown miscreants broke into the building and stole a laptop and two tablets.
