The central Press Information Bureau (PIB) organised a media workshop and discussion session on the central and state governments’ budgets in association with the Shillong Press Club today at the Shillong Club.
C Songate, the GST Commissioner, Shillong, was the chief guest in the presence of IIM Associate Professor of Finance Neelam Rani and North-Eastern Hill University Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics Darishisha War Thangkhiew as speakers, Superintendent of Customs Debashish Modak and the media fraternity.
The session was exclusively for the media with the aim that there be more clarity on the impact of the budget on the common man of the state and translate it into layman’s terms as much as possible for the benefit of the news disseminators.
Songate said service trade centres are the go-to facilities for queries and problems faced by small traders when it comes to GST. Since March 12, the Shillong centre is open for six days a week, including Saturday.
The central government has established more training institutes and centres across the country to help the public file GST returns. These institutes, run by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, also impart training to all state GST officers.
The programme was then followed with the Q&A session for journalists.
