July 16, which is also known locally as the Garo Labour Corps Day has been declared as a local holiday in the district of West Garo Hills.
The Deputy Commissioner today issued a notification declaring a local holiday on Friday to mark the event.
All government offices, magisterial courts and education institutions will remain closed during the day.
The Labour Corp Day commemorates the return of the Garos who went to France during the First World War to assist the allied forces against the Germans. Many of those who were taken to France perished there and only a handful returned that to their homeland on the 16th of July.
