Ka Lympung Ki Seng Kynthei (LKSK) has expressed its happiness over the appointment of Idashisha Nongrang as the first woman Director General of Police (DGP) of Meghalaya.
LKSK, an apex body comprising 28 women’s organisations in East Khasi Hills district, in a press release said the appointment of Nongrang shows that women can be called upon and relied to take up the challenges of the day, if given the right opportunity and platform.
Expressing its gratitude to the concerned authorities for the selection, the LKSK also wished Nongrang the best and to succeed in all her endeavours.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government is awaiting approval from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to appoint a new Director General of Police to replace the incumbent, Lajja Ram Bishnoi, who will leave the post on May 19.
The ECI needs to give the go-ahead as the Model Code of Conduct is still in place nationwide due to the ongoing general election to the Lok Sabha.
Nongrang is currently the Director General of Meghalaya Civil Defence and Home Guards. She is also the only one of the three candidates who is an indigenous tribal and, as such, has received the public backing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), United Democratic Party (UDP), both of which are in government, and the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP).
