Livestock farmers who received piglets under the Rural Backyard Piggery Scheme of the National Livestock Mission in Nongstoiñ have reportedly died.
As per reports, several piglets died after they were distributed to the farmers by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma when he visited Nongstoiñ on October 18. The death of these piglets is a huge loss for these farmers.
Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC), West Khasi Hills unit secretary, Wanteibok Lyngdoh said the piglets might have died because they were not kept well or are unhealthy.
Not sure on the cause of death, Lyngdoh however urged farmers to not to indiscriminately thrown them but to bury them in a proper manner. He also said the government should have sent the piglets for medical examination before distributing them to the famers.
Reportedly, several piglets have died in East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi districts few days or a week after they were distributed to the farmers.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma had earlier said that the animals died because of issues related to their transportation and not of any disease. The government had also assured the beneficiaries that new piglets will be given.
