Visitors littering tourist spots across East Khasi Hills district will be penalised under Section 102 of the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010.
As per the section of the Act, any person who disobeys a lawful order or direction issued by a police officer may be arrested and, upon conviction by a court of law, is liable to a fine of Rs. 5000.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem said, “All tourists/visitors visiting tourist spots in this District are prohibited from indulging in cooking along the road and littering, failing which necessary action will be initiated as per law under Section 102 of Meghalaya Police Act, 2010.”
He noted that visitors are indiscriminately littering public areas by disposing of plastic waste, food packages and other waste materials along crucial tourism corridors, particularly at viewpoints and tourist attractions.
“Such acts gravely by affecting the image of the District, and also pose a danger to the environment and health of the area,” he said.
