Shillong, Sep 10: Raksamgre MLA Limison D Sangma is set to be elected unopposed to the post of Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly after he was the only person to file his nomination papers for the position.
Limison, of the ruling National People’s Party, filed his papers today, the last day for nominations.
Timothy D Shira, the incumbent Deputy Speaker and also of the NPP, suddenly resigned on Monday with very little explanation as to why other than to say that he had been told to do so by NPP supremo and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
With the NPP holding an absolute majority even before considering the position of its allies, there was never any doubt that its choice would go on to be elected.
Limison’s candidature was proposed by Williamnagar legislator and party colleague Marcuise N Marak. The nomination was seconded by Phulbari MLA Abu Taher Mondal, also from the NPP.
Though the election is a bygone conclusion, formalities must still be observed. Thursday is the last day to withdraw nominations and Speaker Thomas A Sangma will declare Limison elected unopposed on Friday.
