Rampant felling of trees and limestone mining have threatened a water source at Nongtalang Mission village under Amlarem Civil Sub-Division.
This was revealed by residents of the village who informed that for four years now, the Amkru water source constructed under the MGNREGA 2016-17 is drying up.
About 130 households at Nongtalang Mission are dependent on this water source for drinking water and now fear the worst of losing it totally.
Rangbah Shnong of Nongtalang Mission, H.B Rymbui said limestone mining activities in the area has had severe impacts on the water source. He said the water does not look fit for consumption especially during the monsoons when it changes colour.
Rymbui has also urged the government to halt limestone mining activities in the village for the time being, till the actual problem is detected.
Meanwhile, a joint inspection at the mining area and the water source was conducted by the executive members of the Nongtalang Mission along with the SDO PHE Amlarem, D. Toi, EAC, Amlarem Sub Division J. Shylla besides others.
Rymbui informed that the department has taken water sample that will be tested. A report will be sent to the Sub Divisional Officer Amlarem to do the needful, he added.
