Khasi traditional medicine practitioners (KTMPs) are rejoicing after receiving official licenses to practise by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
Daiakmenlang Syiem from Madanryting prescribes ‘dawai Niangsohpet’, a traditional medicine for infant diseases. She has been treating patients from all over the state with this medicine for several years.
Syiem lauded the KHADC for recognising the work of KTMPs and said that getting a licence of recognition from the council gives a certain weight to her work.
“We have been practising medicine and treating patients for generations, since the time of our great grandmother, but getting recognition from the council makes our work authentic and allows us to take it further,” she added.
Syiem claimed that the medicines, as they are made from traditional herbs, cause no side effects.
DL Nongspung, another KTMP, said that traditional practitioners have always wanted to be recognised and to be certified and it is a dream come true now that the KHADC has taken this step.
The council certified 14 traditional medicine practitioners on March 10.
The Chief Executive Member of the KHADC, Titosstarwell Chyne, briefed the press about the journey of the commission, which was created a few years ago and how it has worked on designing and shaping the commission for recognition of the traditional practitioner.
