As part of commemoration of 75 years of independence and to celebrate India’s achievements, a lecture series on the ‘Geology of North Eastern India’ was organised today by the Department of Geology at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in collaboration with the Geological Survey of India (GSI).
In the technical session, KV Theunuo, Senior Geologist at the GSI, delivered a talk highlighting the rock types of the Eastern Himalaya and Eastern Himalayan Syntaxial zone with special emphasis on the economic mineral potential, including gold, tin-tungsten, platinoids, etc.
Ramesh Laishram, another GSI Senior Geologist, talked about the geological structures and tectonics of the Eastern Himalaya and Eastern Himalayan Syntaxial zone with special emphasis on the hazards potential of the area.
GSI Superintending Geologist D Mukherjee discussed the distribution of the fossils representing the age range and paleoenvironment of deposition along with the paleocurrent directions.
The programme concluded with a valedictory address by Prof Devesh Walia, the Head of the Department of Geology, who emphasised the importance of the North East region considering that it has great mineral wealth which needs to be explored.
