Rikmenlang Lamare, the last of the six prisoners who escaped from the Jowai district jail on August 10, was today caught by residents of Chiabnai village in Barato area.
Lamare was nabbed by members of the Hynniewtrep Indigenous Territorial Organisation (HITO) and volunteers of the Village Defence Party (VDP) of Chiabnai.
After taking him to the community hall, the fugitive was handed over to a team of policemen unharmed.
Yesterday, another jail escapee Ramesh Dkhar was caught by villagers at Thadmuthlong from a nearby forest area. He was later handed over to police.
It may be mentioned that four prisoners who escaped along with Lamare and Dkhar died after they were were lynched by an angry mob at a jungle area in Shangpung where they were hiding.
The dead include I Love You Talang, Marsanki Tariang, Lodestar Tang and Shidorki Dkhar. While three of them were accused of involvement in kidnapping and murder cases, Tariang was convicted by the Jowai court for killing his wife by setting her on fire at her house in 2015.
Dkhar, who was with the four prisoners, managed to flee to the forest and escaped death.
Lamare on the other hand was not with the group and went his own way to Barato where he was caught by the villagers.
