Hundreds of passengers and commuters are still stranded on National Highway-6 in Ratacherra, East Jaintia Hills due to a major landslide that has blocked movement of traffic since yesterday.
People travelling to Silchar, Manipur and other states from Meghalaya and vice versa have been stuck on the highway since yesterday morning.
The travellers including women and children have no food and water and some of them had to walk for several kilometers braving mud and rain in search of food from nearby areas.
The landslides have taken place at many places along the highway between Ratacherra and Malidor.
There were reports that a bulldozer trying to clear the landslide was also trapped in mudslide.
Thousands of vehicles including night buses, trucks, oil tankers and small cars have been stranded on the highway.
Authorities said that they needed several bulldozers to help in clearing the debris like mud, boulders and fallen trees.
Some of the bulldozers are being brought from Cachar, Assam to assist in the clearing operation.
Meanwhile, East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, Abhilash Banarwal said that district officials are being sent to provide food and water to the starving stranded travellers.
In view of the uncertain condition with more landslides likely to happen in the area, Banarwal has urged people and commuters to exercise caution and not to venture to vulnerable spots of the highway.
