Due to continuous rainfall in recent days, sections on the sides of many roads and highways have weakened, with one landslide the result today on National Highway 6 in Ri-Bhoi.
The landslide and soil erosion happened in Pahamrynñai village. According to available information, no casualties were reported, though the smooth flow of traffic was temporarily affected.
Representatives of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Ri-Bhoi police from the Nongpoh Traffic Branch promptly arrived at the scene. They worked immediately to clear the fallen trees and soil that had covered the highway. Traffic during this time was limited to one side of the road only.
The public have been told to remain vigilant, as landslides and soil erosion frequently occur during heavy rainfall. Areas prone to landslides and soil erosion include Ladlasharai, Umran, Umsamlem, Quinine and Umling, among others.
