Four-time MDC for Mawphlang-Diengiei, Lamphrang Blah, was elected unopposed as the new Chairman of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) at a special session held today.
The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) had unanimously nominated Blah for the post. The UDA has 21 MDCs in the 30-member house. With no chance of causing an upset, the opposition Congress did not field a candidate of its own.
Speaking to reporters, Blah expressed gratitude to all the members of the council for their support and called upon the MDCs to keep aside their party differences and to work together to strengthen the rules and regulations of the council and to protect and uplift the ‘jaitbynriew’.
He promised to consult with the executive concerning the amendment of the council’s rules and will follow up on all the bills passed by the KHADC that are yet to be approved by the Governor.
The post of KHADC Chairman was vacant since the previous holder of the chair, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, resigned following his election as MLA for Mawryngkneng in last year’s by-election.
Blah left the Congress and joined the National People’s Party in October last year to contest the other by-election for the Mawphlang seat. However, he was unsuccessful in that campaign.
Earlier, KHADC Chief Executive Member Titosstarwell Chyne expressed confidence that Blah will manage the house most efficiently thanks to his expertise.
He said that a Chairman is responsible for all the 29 MDCs and not only during the session.
