Nongkrem MLA Lambor Malngiang today met with representatives of Assam Rifles, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police over a clash between personnel of the paramilitary force and the public on April 25.
According to Malngiang, that night saw a scuffle at the main entrance of the Assam Rifles’ headquarters at Kynton U Mon Lad Nongkrem, in the Laitkor area. Despite being a paramilitary facility, the vast Assam Rifles property also encompasses a road that is used by members of the public to connect them to Shillong and various villages.
The MLA urged the Assam Rifles to restrain its personnel from such unfortunate activities.
“I have also given direction to Assam Rifles to reopen the main gate, which leads to Iew Pomthiah, and to reopen the gate which connects to Umiew-Pomlakrai, to ensure the safety and safe passage of the civilians living in these villages,” Malngiang said.
The paramilitary unit, who dub themselves the “friends of the hill people”, has promised that the personnel involved in the scuffle will be arrested.
If such unfortunate events take place in future, Malngiang threatened closure of the road that leads to the Assam Rifles’ campus.
