Hawkers and street vendors currently eking out a living in the increasingly genteel Laitumkhrah area will be moved to Lady Veronica Lane as early as next month, local MLA and cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh told reporters today.
The hawkers to be affected will be those between the Police Point roundabout and Laitumkhrah beat house on the main road of the neighbourhood. Lady Veronica Lane lies parallel to the main road.
Lyngdoh today held a meeting with the Urban Affairs Department along with representatives of the Laitumkhrah Dorbar Shnong Pyllun, Public Health Engineering Department, Public Works Department, police and others on the relocation of the hawkers.
Lyngdoh said that the government has prepared a plan and necessary surveys have been conducted as per the norms of the National Policy on Urban Street Vendors.
“We hope that the vendors’ committee will be able to fast-track this and we are hopeful that things will go well during these 10-15 days and the issuing of relocation orders to the hawkers. We look forward to a hawker-free zone,” she said.
While not as busy as the main road, Lady Veronica Lane is the location for Bethany Society and the accompanying Jyoti Sroat School for the disabled. It also has a gate for St Edmund’s school/college and is the location of Bansara Eye Care Centre. Traffic will likely have to be restricted during the day to ease congestion here, the minister said.
