Rampant littering is threatening some of Meghalaya’s most beautiful destinations and tourist spots.
Kyllang Rock, a huge dome of red granite known locally as Lum Kyllang, is about 11km from Mairang in Eastern West Khasi Hills and its surrounding area is facing such a threat.
Unfortunately, littering is largely caused by local tourists that put this otherwise scenic locale in a very bad light especially when tourists coming from other states and abroad witness this.
Taking cognizance of the matter, the Dorbar Shnong of Mawsmai Kyllang today announced that it has decided to prohibit the consumption of alcohol at the tourist spot and has arranged specific places where tourists can cook food at a cost of Rs 100 so that cleanliness can be maintained.
Sordar of Mawsmai Kyllang, H Lyngdoh Mawnai, said of the development, “The tourists coming here should bear in mind that they can no longer cook food except in the specific place arranged and should abstain from drinking liquor in the area.”
He added that the area has become something of an eyesore but that the Dorbar has engaged volunteers who will monitor the behaviour of tourists.
