Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), East Khasi Hills District organised the World Soil Day programme at its campus in Upper Shillong today. The purpose of celebrating World Soil Day is to raise awareness on the theme ‘Soils: Where the food begins’.
A total of 215 participants attended besides 30 officials from the State Agriculture Department, State Biological Control Laboratory, Central Potato Research Station, and Agricultural Technology Management Agency, East Khasi Hills.
In the inaugural programme, a welcome speech was presented by Badahunlang Wahlang, Senior Scientists and Head, KVK East Khasi Hills. The keynote speech was delivered by Shanmebansan Marbaniang, Subject Matter Specialist (Agriculture Extension).
The guest of honour of the programme K Swer, Director of Agriculture, Meghalaya enlightened the participants on the theme of World Soil Day and encouraged them to improve soil health for human well-being as well as to practice clean farming and reduce the dependence on external inputs.
The message of the Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) was conveyed by Bakordalin Chyne, Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection) in the local language to the participants.
The technical session was conducted in the afternoon section. A discussion on “Soil Health Management, Soil Card Scheme and Natural Farming” was presented by KVK Farm Manager Baiaishahlang Syiemlieh.
