A national campaign on Poshan Abhiyan and tree plantation drive was conducted by the Krishi Vigyan Kendras in Ri Bhoi and West Jaiñtia Hills today attended by farmers who actively took part in the day long programme.
The aim of the programme is to promote the importance of a proper nutrition for the well being of the entire nation.
In KVK Ri Bhoi, 100 women farmers from the district participated in awareness cum lecture on ‘Nutri garden, Nutri Thali, Nutri cereals, Natural farming, Nano fertilizer’ and others. The lecture was given by SMS Home Science, EC Syiemlieh, SMS Agronomy Dr. Meghna Sarma and SMS Soil Science Dr. Popiha Bordolo.
The farmers also brought their local products such as organic vegetables, processed products and displayed them at the programme.
Vegetable seeds and saplings were also distributed to all the farmers at the programme.
In West Jaiñtia Hills, the programme was held at Moopun, Wahiajer wherein KVK Head, Dr D Pasweth talked about national Poshan Abhiyaan. He said the programme laid emphasis on nutritional status of adolescent girls, pregnant women, lactating mothers and children from below 0-6 years age.
Amita Phawa, President of Ledong village organization, Wahiajer spoke about the importance of farming and cultivation based on her experiences.
A technical session aiming at capacity development was also held at the programme. Training on models of nutri garden and package of practices of vegetables and horticultural crops to encourage participants to adopt kitchen gardens for improved health benefits, egg as super food and its benefits, bio-fortified crop varieties was also conducted at the programme.
An interaction was also held between the scientists and farmers as well as distribution of vegetable seed packets to the participants.
