The alleged manipulation in the conduct of the election in the Shillong Club has drawn the attention of the Khasi Students Union (KSU), who has asked the management and administrator of the venerable institution, to be transparent and resolve the issues that have arisen.
In a statement, KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah expressed concern over the alleged manipulation in the conduct of the election of the Board of Directors (BoDs). He said the club, which was established since 1878 was for the welfare of the people and not for a handful to draw their benefits from.
“The alleged anomaly in the elections has proved that everything is not fair and well in the function of the Shillong Club. This has brought confusion in the minds of the people with question if the club is meant only for the affluent from outside,” Thabah said.
The goings-on in the Shillong Club was brought to the fore after an FIR was lodged by one of the members with allegations that the election to the BODs was rigged in favour of a few vested interests. While the board officially consists of seven members, the management is in actuality controlled by just four men and that threats of expulsion and debarment are a common practice, it was reported.
“The management of the club should desist from such acts because the KSU too has every right to show its strength in matters related to the functions of the club,” Thabah warned asking the members to resolve the issue.
