The Khasi Student’s Union has demanded speedy inquiry into ‘plastic rice’ sold in many markets of the State and to produce its report so people are not left in the dark.
The Consumers’ & Farmers Protection Cell of the union said they had raised the concern with the office of the Superintendent of Food & Civil Supply and FSSAI after there were complaints that the a particular brand sold rice containing plastic grains.
Chairman of the cell, Spaindarsing Lyngkhoi said they had questioned if these rice brands coming from other parts of the country are from certified mills and with the knowledge of the government.
The KSU had conducted conduct several surprise inspection in Ri Bhoi and East Jaiñtia Hills districts and even closed down some shops for allegedly selling ‘plastic rice’ and the government is yet to respond and find out if there has been credible evidence provided to show that plastic rice is being substituted for the edible variety.
Meanwhile, the KSU cell also demanded the government to clarify on the ICDS fortified rice after several complaints that beneficiaries are receiving sub-standard rice.
“We want the government to give updated information and clarify on the food items. An inspection should also be conducted at the government level in all mills,” the KSU said.
