The Khasi Students Union (KSU) today met with Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, Raja Brahma, today to advocate for the reactivation of a fuel depot at Umiam in order to mitigate strikes and other disruption to fuel supply.
This move comes in response to the North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union’s (NEPMU) strike call, prompting concerns about oil supply disruptions.
Referring to a 2015 memorandum, the pressure group emphasised the impact of strikes on Meghalaya’s citizens, reiterating that the Umiam depot, handed over to the Assam Oil Division in 1992-1993, is crucial for the state’s oil supply.
The KSU expressed disappointment over oil theft incidents and highlighted the urgency of addressing NEPMU’s strike notice.
The KSU has raised the issue of the depot in past years and has also called for an LPG bottling plant in Ri-Bhoi.
Meghalaya depends completely on supply of LPG, petrol and diesel to come through Assam.
Acknowledging the Meghalaya Police’s efforts against illegal oil sales, the KSU emphasised holding both drivers and sellers accountable. The plea for depot refunctioning aims to ensure a two-month oil reserve, addressing potential supply shortages and saving for consumers.
