The Khasi Students Union (KSU) met Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Minister AT Mondal to request that the government create a new C&RD block for the people in South West Khasi Hills.
The local unit of the pressure group said that the 44 villages in the Umdohlun, Phlangdiloin and Warsan Lyngdoh areas lack development and that residents have to travel for up to 60km to reach the district headquarters of Mawkyrwat or to walk for three hours to reach the sub-divisional HQ of Ranikor for official work.
To bring the administration closer to the people and make up for the bad infrastructure, the KSU said that a new C&RD block based around either Wahkaji or Umdohlun was the only way forward.
A letter was also submitted signed not just by the KSU unit but also by representatives of several of the villages that would benefit by a new block.
