The Khasi Student’s Union, South West Khasi Hills district took upon itself the responsibility to repair two government primary schools under Mawsynram block, lying in shambles for many years.
According to the KSU, students of the Nongshluid Government LP School, established since 1920 and Kenshluid Government LP School have been braving the summer, monsoon and winter without a roof over their heads. Students have to sit on broker desk and benches using umbrellas in the rainy season to take their lessons.
The repair works of the two schools were carried out by the members of the KSU yesterday who also donated new benches and classroom aids.
Jiedskhem Nongsiej the district general secretary and education secretary, Evansroy Nongrem led the repair works after walking for more than three hours carrying the materials required for the works, a statement from the KSU said.
Nongrem said the schools have no basic facilities like drinking water and toilets and the government has never paid any attention to rural schools.
“The government makes tall claims in the Assembly about development of schools. This is not the reality on the ground. We believe that there are many such schools in the State,” he said.
“These are government schools and it’s their responsibility to maintain and ensure that students get the best education. But the government is blind to all the needs of teachers and students and therefore we have done our bid,” he added.
He informed that the repair works of the two schools were carried out after an inspection carried out by the KSU on February 15 and 21, last.
