The Khasi Student’s Union (KSU) in East Jaiñtia Hills district today shut down two shops in Moowakhu and Lumshnong area for alleged sale of ‘plastic rice.’
The first inspection was carried out by the KSU, Wapung unit wherein the activists kept the MSTS Star shop under lock and key. Unit president, Shwari Ryngkhlem stated that the grains were adulterated and demanded that the Deputy Commissioner (Supply) to take action against the illegality.
According to the KSU, the adulterated grains are being sold by Sun Rise Company to the shop and the rice has even reached markets in Lumshnong, Umpleng and Jalaphet.
Members of the Meghalaya Peoples United Front, Wapung Unit present during the inspection said that authorities should conduct a thorough inspection and ensure that the adulterated rice are not sold to other villages in the district.
Meanwhile, owner of the MSTS Star stated that they procured 50 sacks of rice from the Sun Rise and Antime companies and said that he was not aware of ‘plastic rice.’
On the other hand the KSU, Lumshnong Unit locked the Hussein Store after its members in Wapung alleged that rice contained plastic.
