The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged the State government to intervene and stop the Shillong Cantonment Board from levying property tax on Lady Keane College.
Recently, the Lady Keane College was asked to pay a sum of Rs 45 lakh as ‘property tax’ by the Shillong Cantonment Board since it is located on defence land.
“How can Cantonment Board claim ownership over the land where Lady Keane College is located when the fact is that this college was established way back in 1935 long before Shillong Cantonment Board was set up? It is also unreasonable to levy tax on the college which was established during the British period,” the KSU said.
Stating that Lady Keane College had contributed a lot towards education and empowerment of girls, the KSU said that the State government should immediately intervene on the matter.
Recently, the Shillong Cantonment Board had asked Lady Keane College to pay Rs 45,25,956 as property tax which has calculated for the period from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023.
