Shillong, Feb 3: The Khasi Students Union (KSU), Wahkaliar unit has expressed serious concerns over rampant pollution of Daiñthlen and Umtynghiang rivers and illegal dumping of waste at Lum Mawkyrdup in Sohra.
KSU unit President Carmel Fedrick Malngiang today submitted a complaint letter to the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) highlighting the detrimental effects these activities pose to both the local environment and the health of the surrounding community.
The union said rampant dumping of waste at Lum Mawkyrdup would have detrimental effects to both the local environment and the health of the people of Wahkaliar, Lummawshken, Mawsahew, Mawkawir and other surrounding villages.
Further, the union also raised pollution of the Umtynghiang River caused by washing vehicles and clothes, leading to significant contamination and waste disposal of picnic goers.
Malngiang said the SDO assured to address the issue and would soon conduct a joint inspection involving the Seng, Hima Sohra, and his office.
