The Khasi Students Union (KSU), NEHU unit has alleged that migrant workers engaged in construction works at the university have not submitted proper documents to avail work permit.
The NEHU unit in collaboration with the KSU Mawlai circle sent back 16 labourers today and said that the group wants local labourers in any construction work.
Unit president, Comingstar Kharsyntiew stated that most of the labourers have applied for the work permit without police verification and no objection certificates from the dorbar shnong. He said that most of the labourers claim that they are required to submit only EPIC card.
He said that the labour department should ensure that police verification certificates he made mandatory.
On February 24, about 170 unregistered labourers were sent back to the Assam border after members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) found them working on the permanent campus of the IIM at Umsawli without any work permit from the labour department.
The pressure group had said that such checking will be carried out from time to time if they receive information about the presence of a large number of labourers from outside the state in any location.
