The Khasi Students’ Union, East Jaiñtia Hills (EJH) district unit, has kept the tollgate at Lumshnong under lock and key stating that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) failed to maintain the NH 6.
The KSU members were led by their president Streamly N Suchen, vice-president, Satly Ryngkhlem, general secretary, Kwillness S Suchiang who demanded the tollgate operators and employees to stop collecting toll and asked vehicles to pass through the gate free.
“Until and unless the NHAI takes action and repair the deplorable condition of the NH 6 we will not remove the lock and we will not allow toll collection,” Suchen said.
He said the condition of the highway has worsened day by day affecting thousands of commuters travelling to and fro from Silchar side to Guwahati and vice versa.
According to the KSU, there is also resistance in Cachar district for installation of a toll gate. “We are also citizens of this country and if no toll gate has been installed there why should East Jaiñtia Hills accept it. It is exploitation,” the leaders stated.
