The Employment Monitoring Cell of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has flagged irregularities in appointments made at the National Law University (NLU), Meghalaya and deemed them illegal.
These appointments are those of a Deputy Registrar, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor (permanent and tenure) Professor of Practice, Research Fellow, Post – Doctoral Fellow and others.
According to the KSU, one Gurpreet Singh was illegally appointed as the Deputy Registrar of the university. Based on the advertisement published on April 14, 2024, five candidates were shortlisted on August 30, 2024 for the personal interview, the results of which were never out or made public, the union said.
While the post was advertised as a ‘permanent post’, thus making the Meghalaya State Reservation Policy mandatory, the post was changed to contractual to accommodate Singh, deviating from the advertisement, the KSU stated.
The union said the appointment is laced with nepotism and favouritism and demanded the university to revoke the appointment and make the result of the personal interview public.
Similarly, the result of interview for the post of Associate Professor and Assistant Professor (permanent and tenure) was never declared and without following due procedures while neglecting the State Reservation Policy. “The number of posts which was originally advertised as per the advertisement and the number of faculty members appointed as seen in the University website does not tally, thus, verifying the gross manipulation and illegal appointment in the University,” the KSU added.
The union also said appointment for the posts of Professor of Practice, Research Fellow, Post – Doctoral Fellow, etc. was never advertised which is arbitrary and unlawful.
Furthermore, the University Statute and other regulations such as financial regulations and service regulations are not made public. “This enables authorities in the University to bend the rules on their own accords for their own personal gain. Even the RTIs that are filed by the Union and public at large are not being address and bogus reason and citation are given to quell all the queries so that none of the illegal matters done by you or the University at large comes to light,” the KSU alleged.
The KSU has also demanded the university to respect local festivals and important dates of the Khasi community.
