Shillong, Aug 17: Taking a unilateral step, the local circles of the Khasi Students Union and Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) joined forces to improve public safety on the under-construction road from Laitlyngkot to Mawlieh under the Shillong-Dawki Road project.
The two pressure groups applied radium retro reflective tape along the stretch of the road to enhance visibility and safety for commuters, particularly at night.
The move comes in response to the alleged apathy of the construction company and the government towards addressing public grievances related to the road construction. The groups claimed that despite repeated complaints, no concrete actions have been taken to mitigate the risks faced by travellers.
The KSU and FKJGP also called on the government and construction company to address concerns related to mud and landslides, to which the area is particularly prone.
