Shillong, Dec 15: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) to immediately withdraw a notice for a public hearing scheduled on December 19 for Shree Cement Company at Daistong village, East Jaintia Hills.
According to the KSU, the notice contains “erroneous and misleading facts”, contravening the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification, 2006. The union questioned the statutory requirement of furnishing requisite documents, stating it had been circumvented, raising concerns about ultra vires in relation to the Meghalaya Land Transfer Act, 1972.
Stating that the land to set up the cement company was transferred from a tribal person, Syrpaibha Sukhlain, to the non-tribal entity through an Agreement to Sale on October 6, 2025, the KSU said that this was in violation of Section 3(1) of the Meghalaya Land Transfer Act, 1972
“We caution that any further action… may be construed as an endorsement of a land transfer prohibited under state legislation, leading to serious legal and constitutional consequences,” the KSU stated.
The union demanded the notice be withdrawn to ensure compliance with the Act and the EIA.
