The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has continued to defy the writ of the state government by persisting in it checking the legal status of migrant workers in the state.
One of the latest incidents occurred yesterday in Pynursla. The workers were employed in construction of the Block Development Office.
The Chief Minister has already described the checking of labourers’ documents by non-state actors as illegal but the KSU has continued regardless, arguing that the state government is not doing its job. Police have rarely intervened directly in any of these incidents but have filed cases after the fact.
The KSU instructed the migrants to return to their place of origin as they were doing the construction work in Pynursla without a work permit. The CM had also argued last week that there is no work permit system in Meghalaya but the KSU has accused him of not knowing the state’s own laws.
