The South West Khasi Hills unit of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) has appealed to banks in the district to remain closed on Thursday on account of Sngap Sing Syiem Day.
All government offices, revenue, magisterial courts and educational institutions in the district will remain closed for the local holiday.
However, bank unions have previously said that any closure of banks for holidays has to be done under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881 and not through a simple government notification.
On many occasions members of pressure groups have barged into bank branches and forced them to close if they were open on local holidays.
