A minor girl from Shillong, who had been missing since March 4, has been rescued by police, with two people suspected of being involved in her kidnapping arrested by state police, it was informed today.
While on her way to school, the girl apparently went missing and a case of kidnapping was registered with Madanrting Police Station by her parents.
One Pankaj Kumar Bharadwaj (22) was soon identified as a suspect after he disappeared from the area. Intel suggested that he was in Guwahati, Darjeeling, Siliguri or Dhubri but there was no luck in catching the suspect or rescuing the girl.
Later, police learnt that Bharadwaj had received help from his mother in Himachal Pradesh and a police team from East Khasi HIlls travelled to Hamirpur in Himachal on April 7. While the mother, Saraswati Devi, was arrested, her son and the kidnapped girl were not located.
Further investigations led the authorities to Jorhat in Upper Assam on April 30. In collaboration with police there, the girl was rescued and Bharadwaj arrested. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger informed that the team of police are on their way back to Shillong with the minor and the suspect, who will be forwarded to court.
