Shillong, Nov 20: The plan to transform Khyndailad into a music boulevard, known as Lynti Sur Bathiang, may face delays as two leaders hold different views on how and when the project should proceed.
Former Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh MLA, who remains an adviser to the government, had proposed turning the stretch into a dedicated music zone after relocating roadside vendors. However, Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, says the idea can move forward only after the old Assembly building is dismantled, as the beautification work is supposed to start from that point.
“Yes, it is true that we had committed on August 14 that once the area becomes fully pedestrianised, it would be converted into a music zone. That is why it was named Lynti Sur Bathiang,” Lyngdoh recalled.
On the other hand, Dhar said the beautification of Khyndailad is not stalled but is still in progress. “You know very well that even the old Assembly has not yet shifted to the new location. Once that happens, we can begin the full beautification of the area,” he said.
Completion of the new Assembly in New Shillong has faced several delays, with the project now only slated to be finished well into next year.
According to Dhar, a detailed project report (DPR) is being finalised. The plan includes dismantling the old Assembly building, creating pedestrian-friendly walkways, improving footpaths, installing flower pots and upgrading the tiles along the stretch.
Dhar also said that some residents have raised concerns about closing the road. “We are discussing the matter. Once everything is clear, we will fix the timing (for vehicles) and proceed with changing the tiles and placing flower pots along the road but only after both the government and residents agree,” he added.
