The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has criticised the MDA government, accusing it of power misuse.
The party’s comment was prompted by the appointment of former Tura MP, Agatha K Sangma, who is also the sister of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, as the new chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
KHNAM working President Thomas Passah said the appointment is an open display of misuse of political power. “We strongly condemn such action by the MDA government. This is an open misuse of political powers at the expense of the exchequer. Such appointments also jeopardises the future of the children in the state,” he stated.
He also slammed political parties for keeping silent on the matter and stated that the alliance partners of the MDA will not speak because they have received their share of appointments in the government.
“We also express our surprise as to how the letter of James Sangma proposing the name of Agatha as the Chairperson of SCPCR has any value at government decision,” he added.
He said the Government notification dated July 10, 2013 clearly states that “A Chairperson should be a person of eminence and who has done outstanding work for promoting the welfare of children,” and we do not see that Agatha Sangma qualifies for the appointment.
