The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has confirmed 15 candidates so far for the next Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections, which will take place no earlier than next year.
Speaking to Highland Post, KHNAM vice-president Thomas Passah said the party’s state election committee has yet to decide to field candidates in the Jaintia Hills (JHADC) constituencies.
“If we get many candidates, then only we will think about fielding candidates in the JHADC, but as of now, we are concentrating on KHADC constituencies only,” he said.
KHNAM has weakened considerably over the years and now has no MLAs in the Assembly or MDCs in the district councils. It did not contest even one seat in last year’s Assembly election.
When asked, Passah maintained that KHNAM is still clean and does not believe in growing through money and power. It has also stood by its principles and never compromised with its issues and ideology concerning the Khasi people, he added.
