Shillong, Mar 10: In the backdrop of the current political climate surrounding the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), the Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has again reminded the district council in the Khasi Hills on the need to amend the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous District (Constitution of District Council) Rules 1951, Para 128(1) and 128(3) to prevent non-Khasi as voters in the elections.
KHNAM leader Thomas Passah in a memorandum submitted today highlighted the pressing need for these amendments by referencing the current events in the Garo Hills region, where there is a tussle over participation of non-tribals in the elections that have led to violence.
Passah expressed concern that a similar situation could arise in Khasi Hills if proactive measures aren’t taken.
He said that this request is not new, as the party has previously reached out to the KHADC via letters dated April 8, 2025, and January 12, 2026.
The push for amendments to the AD rules has been a long-standing issue, presented by KHNAM in several executive committee meetings since 2014. However, no action had been taken until now, prompting the recent submission, he added.
“We want this amendment to happen to ensure the walls of the KHADC are protected by law. We have again come with a memorandum today with a hope that with what is happening in Garo Hills the EC will take the matter seriously,” Passah said.
