The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has objected to the registration of ex-servicemen from Manipur and other states by the Zilla Welfare Department in Meghalaya.
In a letter to Cyril V Darlong Diengdoh, Secretary of the General Administration Department, KHNAM said that the party has been informed that the Zilla Welfare Department, which is a subordinate office under the GAD, has registered ex-servicemen from Manipur.
“We are truly saddened by the violence in Manipur and we pray for peace and harmony in the region. However, due to the ongoing violence, it has been reported that there has been an increase in the number of ex-servicemen from Manipur who are being registered with the Meghalaya Zilla Sainik Department,” the party said. “Ex-servicemen from Manipur are supposed to be registered in their home state so that they can avail welfare and benefits as provided from time to time in their home state.”
The minor party feels that having outsiders registered in Meghalaya will dilute the benefits available to those native to the state.
