The unfulfilled desire of Meghalaya’s two main tribal communities, the Khasi and Garo, for inclusion of their languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution was raised in Parliament today by the state’s lone Rajya Sabha MP, WR Kharlukhi.
The MP said, in a short speech, that he was disappointed that Meghalaya had celebrated its 50 years of statehood last month but still does not have a recognised language in the Eighth Schedule.
“Meghalaya comprises two ethnic groups: Khasi-Jaintia and Garos who speak different languages. But the sad part is that, despite the demand made by the people of the state and a resolution passed in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly for inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, nothing has been done till date,” he said.
