Former IPS officer, Mariahom Kharkrang today officially joined the BJP.
Kharkrang who got nominated to the IPS from the State Police Service in 2009 was the Inspector General of Prisons. After 25 years in service, he applied for voluntary retirement from service and handed over his responsibility on September 1.
Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and culture Arjun Ram Meghwal, cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai, BJP MLA AL Hek and other senior leaders were present at a function to welcome Kharkrang.
He said he joined the party for development and said he aspires to contest from the North Shillong constituency. Kharkrang said his ticket to contest the 2023 elections now depends on the central leadership.
The former IG Prisons was accompanied by his family members and several of his supporters.
Although there are at least four contenders for the BJP ticket from the seat, the former police officer is said to be the front runner for the ticket.
Currently, North Shillong is seeing hectic political activities with a multi-corner contest on the cards.
Besides sitting MLA Adelbert Nongrum, the other contestants include former Director of Health Services Dr. Aman War (UDP) and former PWD Executive Engineer Ransom Sutnga (NPP).
