IPS officer Mariahom Kharkrang today secured voluntary retirement from service.
Kharkrang who got nominated to the IPS from the State Police Service in 2009 was the Inspector General of Prisons.
After 25 years in service, Kharkrang applied for voluntary retirement from service on June 1 on personal grounds.
As per Rule 16 of All India Service (DCRB) Rules, 1958, a member of the service can take voluntary retirement after giving at least three months previous notice in writing to the State government and after completing 20 years of service or attaining 50 years of age.
Kharkrang was born on January 1, 1965. He joined the MPS on April 1, 1996.
Meanwhile, Kharkrang is likely to contest the 2023 Assembly elections from North Shillong constituency on a BJP ticket.
Although there are at least four contenders for the BJP ticket from the seat, the former police officer is said to be the front runner for the ticket.
However, BJP sources said that the final decision on the ticket will be taken by the central party leadership and is expected to be announced sometime in October.
Currently, North Shillong is seeing hectic political activities with a multi-corner contest on the cards.
Besides sitting MLA Adelbert Nongrum who is likely to join the newly floated Voice of the People Party (VPP), the other contestants include former Director of Health Services Dr. Aman War (UDP) and former PWD Executive Engineer Ransom Sutnga (NPP).
Interestingly, Dr. War retired from his 33 years service in the Health Department on June 30 while Sutnga secured voluntary retirement from service in the PWD on June 30.
