Shillong, Dec 21: The Executive Committee of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) after the death of the Syiem of Hima Sohra Freeman Sing Syiem, has appointed Mynjurlang Majaw, as the Acting Chief to administer the Administration in the Hima Sohra.
In a notification issued on December 19, the Executive Committee of the KHADC, stated that the appointment was made as per Section 11 of the United Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District ( Appointment and Succession of Chiefs and Headmen) Act, 1959.
According to the notification, the Acting Chief shall administer the administration in accordance with the Customs and Traditions of the Hima and the Acts of the KHADC, in collaboration with the Executive Dorbar of the Hima, for approval by the KHADC.
This decision of the KHADC has caused heartburn to the group in favour of Marremdor Syiem, who was next in line to hold the office of the Syiem of Hima Sohra.
Earlier that same day when the appointment was made, the representatives of various traditional heads of Hima Sohra met Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tony Winston Lyngdoh and the Executive Member (EM) in-charge Elaka, Denzil R Chen of the KHADC over the delay of the council to appoint Marremdor Syiem as the new Syiem (Chief), after the demise of Freeman Sing Syiem.
Meanwhile, the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has also weighed in on the matter, saying that the KHADC has wrongly invoked Section 11 of the Appointment and Succession of Chiefs and Headmen Act 1959 in order to ignore Marremdor Syiem and instead appoint an Acting Chief.
In an email, the HNLC went on to threaten the KHADC’s Executive Committee members if they continued to hold out against recognising Marremdor Syiem.
