The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will soon introduce the clan bill for proper administration of clans (Kur), said Chief Executive Member Titosstarwell Chyne today.
Chyne who inaugurated monoliths dedicated to the Syiems and Lyngdohs of Hima Maharam to observe Sngap Syiem Day at Mawruduk, Mawlangwir said that the clan bill will regulate and strengthen the Kur system.
He said the renowned freedom fighter, Sngap Syiem who was part of the freedom struggle against the British imperial supremacy, had on this day issued a notification that land documents are means to safeguard the ownership of land. The KHADC has been following his footsteps and has recently passed the Regulation and Administration of Land Bill 2021, he added.
Stating that the government does not recognise documents issued by the rangbah shnongs and the syiems, he said that the land bill is necessary to protect the land of the Khasi people and urged the traditional heads not to misuse their powers.
Chyne hoped that the bill will be passed by the State government and gets the assent of the Governor as he felt that remembering Sngap Syiem with just a holiday is not realistic without following his footsteps.
Others who spoke at the programme were Pius Marweiñ, MLA and MDC of Ranikor, MDC of Mawkyrwat Carness Sohshang, Additional Deputy Commissioner W. Biam, Rowell Lyngdoh, the Lyngdoh Rangbah of Hima Maharam and KHADC adviser Robertjune Kharjahrin.
Syiem of Hima Maharam, Niandro Syiemiong, Myntri of Mawlangwir, N.S Wanniang, P. Wanniang, Myntri Shnong of Sohkhyllam and others were present on the ocassion.
