Shillong, Aug 5: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Tuesday summoned the Chiefs of Hima Sohiong and Hima Jirang, due to dispute over the jurisdiction of land.
Recently Hima Jirang erupted in protest after learning that the Nongwah Mawtamur Sohiong Lyngdohship, a sub-entity of Hima Sohiong, allegedly intends to claim ownership of land belonging to Hima Jirang in the Rani Jirang area.
According to the concerned parties, the KHADC has urged both Hima Sohiong and Hima Jirang to settle the dispute amicably even as the district council asked for time to study all relevant documents before making any decision on the matter.
Speaking to reporters, Syiem of Hima Jirang R. H. Wahlang said that it would have been justifiable if the KHADC had called for discussion only on the 15 villages of Nongwah Mawtamur Sohiong Lyngdohship, under Hima Sohiong was tagged by the district council to Hima Jirang.
But according to Wahlang, the Sordar of Hima Nongwah-Mawtamur, tried to interfere in the affairs of Hima Jirang.
The Syiem of Hima Jirang said that this is direct interference into the working of the affairs of the Hima.
Wahlang said that Rani Jirang is under the jurisdiction of the Hima and the Sordar of Nongwah-Mawtamur which is under Hima Sohiong, will get land to construct an office under the former’s authority.
Meanwhile, P L Thabah acting Lyngdoh Sohiong Lyngdohship said there was no intention to inaugurate the office of the Dorbar Hima at Rani Jirang as alleged by the Hima Jirang.
Thabah also said that there is no intention to forcibly take any land belonging to Hima Jirang.
He also said that there was no public function at Rani Jirang but his visit to the place with the Chief Executive Member of the KHADC Shemborlang Rynjah was to inspect Nongwah-Mawtamur, which is a sub entity of Hima Sohiong adding that this place is not a disputed area.
