The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has served legal notice on Chandlok Dkhar, the leader of Sein Raij Jowai for making “uncalled for” remarks against the council and its members.
Informing this today, KHADC Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem said that the legal notice was served on Dkhar today by the Secretary, Executive Committee of KHADC.
It may be mentioned that during his speech at the Seng Kut Snem celebration of the Seng Khasi at Jaiaw here yesterday, Dkhar had called for abolition of district councils for their alleged failure to protect the culture of local tribal communities. He also alleged that MDCs were involved in corruption.
“In our State we have three district councils. He must point out which district council is a failure. He cannot just give sweeping remarks or blanket allegations. We will not accept this,” Syiem said.
Asking Dkhar to clarify his allegations, Syiem said, “He should clarify which district council had worked against the cultural interest of the local people.”
The KHADC chief said that the fate of traditional heads like Syiems, Dolois and Rangbah Shnongs would be in jeopardy if the district councils are abolished.
He also said that Hima Mylliem and Hima Khyrim are still holding on to their traditions and cultural identities due to the existence of KHADC and the constitutional safeguards it possessed under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Slamming Dkhar for accusing MDCs of corruption, Syiem said, “We cannot accept this. I don’t know who he is accusing. He has tarnished the image of all the MDCs and caused disrepute to them,” Syiem said.
