Concerns of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to the proposed amendments to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution appear to have been relieved after a meeting with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today.
Key to the problem was the use of the word ‘council’ instead of ‘dorbar’.
This worry over semantics saw KHADC chief Titosstarwell Chyne meet with Sangma today to see clarity on the amendments.
On January 28, the state cabinet agreed to propose to the central government that Rangbah Shnongs, Sordars and Nokmas be made ex-officio members of the village councils that will be created through the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Speaking to the press today, Chyne said that the council wanted clarity on these councils and would prefer that they be called dorbars.
He added that the CM clarified that in Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills these bodies will be known as dorbars, though for Garo Hills they will be called councils.
Sangma also said that a meeting will be held with the Union Home Ministry to discuss this so that there is no confusion when the amendment is finally approved.
